Each of these individuals has demonstrated a unique commitment to their projects and to the firm, while also engaging our community as champions for important causes. Senior Associates
Emily Dawson
During her 14 years in the industry, Emily has been focused on raising the bar in sustainable design. As a born-and-raised Alaskan, a desire to improve the way communities impact the natural environment led her to architecture. She co-leads SRG’s Sustainability Group and has been involved in research into new materials and systems that improve the performance of the firm’s work.
Emily recently designed the 1st Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) structure built in Oregon as part of an expansion of the Oregon Zoo. Demonstrating CLT’s viability on a significant project has helped accelerate its market acceptance in the design and construction industry, an important regional initiative. In 2015, she was part of a group who received the SRG travel research fellowship to study mass timber applications in Europe, which deepened her interest in CLT as a driver for modular construction processes. Her work has informed new projects that incorporate CLT, including the Glenwood Parking Garage.
She is a sought-after speaker, and has presented at industry conferences on Mass Wood topics for the last few years. For her rising presence in the industry, she was recognized last year as a DJC Woman of Vision. In her role as a project manager, she is constantly looking for ways to bring teams to collaborative, creative solutions, and to have a great time doing it. She graduated with her Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University.
Mark Kogut
Mark is from Hamburg, NY and moved to Portland in 1993. He is a graduate of Clemson University and worked in Cambridge, MA for 10 years prior to moving to the West Coast. In Cambridge, he worked for Benjamin Thompson (an architect, educator, entrepreneur and restaurateur) assisting on the Union Station renovation in Washington DC, Law School Dormitory for NYU and The Jacksonville Landing projects. At SRG Mark has worked on the design teams for the new School of Business Administration at Portland State University and the new Multnomah County Courthouse in downtown Portland.
In addition to his professional practice Mark was an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture at Portland State University for ten years. His design studio courses strive to foster a dialog with his students where they are encouraged to explore the art and craft of making architecture. Mark’s wife, Barbara, is an architect at FFA working with the National Park Service for projects on the west coast. They live in Ladd’s Addition with their 14-year-old twins, Lucas and Emma, and their three-year-old Bernese Mountain dog Abby. Mark enjoys traveling around the NW with the family, playing golf and running an occasional half marathon.
Josh Orona
Josh is originally from Kennewick Washington, and has been in Portland since 2004. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from Washington State University, and worked at ZGF for 10 years prior to joining SRG. During his career Josh has focused on a variety of project types, including Corporate, Higher Ed, Research, and Sports. Projects include the Port of Portland Headquarters, University of Oregon Athletic Medicine Center, Max Planck Florida Institute, and the US Embassy in Paramaribo, Suriname. Most recently at SRG Josh worked on the Marcus Mariota Sports Performance Center at the University of Oregon.
Josh brings a collaborative approach to design and enjoys executing well designed spaces through thoughtful, finely crafted detail.
Josh is married to Fran (also a designer) and they have a Chihuahua named Abbey. In their free time they enjoy travelling, fixing up their 1925 craftsman, being outside, and running a part time jewelry and accessory business.
Jennifer Youngblood
Jennifer is originally from the suburbs of Detroit, MI, but has been living in Seattle for the last twenty-four years. She attended the College for Creative Studies, Detroit and received her BFA in Photography and Painting. Years later, she went back to school for Interior Design at Bellevue College.
Prior to SRG, she worked at a photography studio in New York City, travelling, and doing set design for low budget films. It was then that she realized she enjoyed creating spaces and decided to go back to school for interior design. Jennifer was first an Interiors consultant on and off for SRG starting in 2004, but officially started full time in 2014.
A few of Jennifer’s favorite projects at SRG have been the Student Fitness Center at Everett Community College, the Seattle North Precinct Police Station, and the Hec Ed Student Services at the University of Washington. One of her current projects, the Westpointe Career and Technical Education Center at Salt Lake Community College, has been particularly fun for her as well.
Associates
Louise Foster
A native of Britain, Louise taught architecture at the University of Huddersfield and worked for three major U.K. architectural practices (Sheppard Robson, ORMS in London and Allen Todd in Leeds) prior to moving to Portland in 1996. She graduated from the University of Portsmouth with Bachelor of Arts in Architecture with Honors, and a professional graduate degree, Dip Arch, which included 6 months studying at the RWTH Aachen, Germany.
For the last 20 years Portland has been home and ironically it was Portland State University that brought her here when her husband, Clive, was offered a faculty position with PSU’s Department of Art .
Since being in Portland, she has worked for DOWA, Opsis, OH & FFA, as well as an earlier two-year stint at SRG prior to returning in 2006.
A few memorable SRG projects, which she is proud to have been a part of, include the Portland State University Shattuck Hall Renovation, Lillis Business School at the University of Oregon, Chemeketa Community College Health and Sciences Building, Lane Community College Downtown Building and of course, her current project, PSU’s School of Business Administration with Behnisch Architekten.
Louise and Clive have two sons: Theo, a Junior at the University of Chicago studying Persian and Turkish, and Seth, a 7th Grader at Catlin Gabel. The whole family are avid travelers, probably due to family ties being back in the UK. Her other passion is the PSU School of Architecture where Clive has been Director for the last decade. She enjoys introducing her colleagues to a young and expanding program and working alongside its alumni at SRG.
Jenna McPherson
Jenna grew up in Louisville, Colorado (right outside of Boulder) and attended the University of Colorado where she graduated with degrees in Psychology and Sociology. After the experience of living in Aix-en-Provence, France she was inspired to attend design school. Upon moving to Portland in 2009, with her husband Chase, she attended the Art Institute of Portland, and received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a focus in Interior Design. Before working at SRG, Jenna worked for Green Curve Studio, a small Orthodontic Office Design Firm, where she managed projects in Montana, Louisiana, and Virginia. Jenna started at SRG in 2014 as a member of the healthcare team.
Jenna has a passion for Pediatric Healthcare Design. Her favorite project at SRG has been the OHSU Pediatric Sedation/MRI project. She was thrilled to be engaged on the project from the very beginning through construction, and has enjoyed the positive feedback received on the design from patients, staff, and OHSU Admin! Jenna is passionate about many of the SRG initiatives, and is involved in the Emerging Professionals Group, Diversity Initiative, Mentorship Group, and Safety Committee. Jenna also serves on the IIDA Oregon Chapter board as the VP of Sponsorship & Fundraising.
Outside of work Jenna and Chase love spending time with friends and family while simultaneously trying a new restaurant or bar. She has a great love of the outdoors, landscaping, travel, quiet time with a good book, and of course many long walks with her chocolate lab, Porter.
Marshall Turner
Marshall is a third-generation Seattleite. He received his BS in Political Science and Audio Engineering from Western Washington University. Before starting at SRG in 2015, Marshall worked in marketing at Schacht Aslani Architects. Prior to that, he lived in Central America helping to develop fuel-efficient stove factories. While he doesn’t have a specific favorite SRG project, Marshall is interested in all science/technology and sports related projects that SRG has done.
Nicole Allen
Nicole joined SRG’s marketing team in 2012, bringing to the firm strategic thinking, instinctive organization, and a dedication to facilitating relationships. With nearly eight years of prior experience practicing landscape architecture, Nicole is fluent in both the languages of design and communication. This trait enables her to translate ideas and develop well-articulated communication for SRG’s clients, our peers, and the greater community.
A native of Illinois (not Chicago), Nicole has been making her way up the West Coast from Southern California since 2003. Upon arriving in Portland in 2010, she decided there was no need to continue any further north – Portland is home. Nicole received her Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Iowa State University and her master’s degree in Strategic Communication from University of Oregon. In her free time, Nicole enjoys knitting, running, and cycling. But not at the same time – that would be dangerous … or a very “Portland” take on the traditional triathlon.
Robert Lochner
Robert received his Master of Architecture degree from University of Oregon. At SRG he has worked on a variety of projects, including the Oregon Garden Education Building the Oregon Department of Forestry; University of California, Riverside College of Engineering B2; University of California, Riverside Medical Research Building; and Washington State University Veterinary Biomedical Research Building. Currently he is working on the Glenwood CLT Parking Garage in Springfield, OR and developing interactive graphics for the Portland Community College Facilities Master Plan project.
Stan Barter
Stan received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Lewis and Clark College. He spent 3 years from 1997-2000 working in the CROET building at OHSU as research assistant in a microbiology lab. In 2000 he left Portland and microbiology to move to Lake Tahoe where he spent ten years as a carpenter, skier, and shop manager – building custom homes during the summers and overseeing one of the highest throughput ski rental shops in Northern California during the winters. During this time he also pursued an associate’s degree in residential design and took classes in engineering at the University of Nevada Reno. In 2010 he and his wife, Caylin, moved to Tucson to attend graduate school. Caylin at the University of Arizona College of Law and Stan at the University of Arizona College of Architecture. Upon graduation Caylin and Stan were the commencement speakers for their respective colleges and Stan’s thesis project won an AIA Design Excellence Award.
Before coming to SRG in 2014, Stan worked for award winning design firms in Tucson and Reno. During his time at SRG, Stan has overseen construction administration of the Center for Radiochemistry Research, assisted programming for the UC Davis Equine Health Center, taught classes in Design and Fabrication at PSU, collaborated on the design and documentation of the Primate Imaging Center, worked with Chris Kline, Kevin Chavez and others to develop a vision for an expanded model shop for the new Portland office, and attained licensure as an architect.
Katie Hunt
Originally from Memphis, TN, Katie has now been in the Seattle area for 8 years. After studying Textiles and Architecture Studies as well as French and Art History at the University of Kansas, she relocated to Seattle to attend the University of Washington and received her Master of Architecture degree.
Prior to starting at SRG in 2012, Katie worked through graduate school in the special collections department at the Henry Art Gallery. She really enjoyed the work there, especially since she had free reign to pull many samples for her school work from their massive archives.
One of Katie’s favorite projects at SRG has been the Student Recreation Center at Whatcom Community College, as it was her first project she worked on. Currently, Katie is working on the Student Recreation Center at South Seattle College as well as the Romney Gym Renovation at Montana State University.
In her personal time, Katie enjoys playing recreational volleyball and loves to garden and tend to her growing number of house plants. Katie is also currently assisting her banjo-picking sister with branding her musical persona as she finishes recording her first album.
